Little Shop of Cannibals

Ch. 1

Twas the 21st day of the month of March

In an early year of a new decade

The human race suddenly encountered

A deadly threat to its very existence

This terrifying enemy surfaced

As such enemies often do

In the seemingly most innocent and unlikely of places…

“Winston!” a young man named Will Graham called out when one of his several dogs ran out to the garden surrounding this home.  The dog had caught the scent of something odd and ran to check it out.

When Will caught up to Winston, he found something wriggling within the rose bushes.  He crept down and pulled the thing out, and he was amazed by what he had found.

Will decided to bring the bundle to work with him to show to his colleagues (and seek advice).  He held the bundle to his chest as he walked towards the laboratory, where two scientists named Jimmy and Brian were performing an autopsy on a corpse.

“What’s that you got, Graham?” Jimmy asked when he found Will with the bundle.

“I was asking the same question myself,” Will said as he gently placed the bundle on a table.  Jimmy and Brian stopped what they were doing and joined Will.

Wrapped in a soft blanket was what appeared to be a baby, but there was something off about him…way off.  He had green skin and light-gray hair dotted with leaves, and small tendrils of vines and laurel branches were growing on his back.  He stirred a bit, and he opened his brown eyes.

Brian wrinkled his nose.  “A plant baby?  Where’d you find him?”

“In my garden this morning…” Will began to explain.  “…well, my dog found him first.  Where he actually came from is anybody’s guess.”

“Never seen anything like it,” Jimmy commented.  “He looks kinda cute, though.”  He lightly tickled the plant baby’s chin, getting a small giggle out of him.

“Am I interrupting anything, boys?” a female voiced asked.  Will looked up and blushed when he found that it belonged to his co-worker, Alana Bloom.

“Seems like Graham here became a daddy this morning,” Jimmy said as Alana went over and picked up the baby.

“Actually, I found him in my garden,” Will said.  “He was lying there, and I can’t just leave him alone.”

“So, what’s his name?” Alana asked.

Will hadn’t thought about that.  “Uh…well…”  He spent about half a minute thinking of a name, and he finally blurted, “Hannibal!”

         “Fancy,” Brian noted.

Alana handed the baby back to Will.  “He seems cute.  Does he have any parents?”

“C’mon, like anybody would give birth to that,” Brian muttered.

Will gave Brian a death glare, and he told Alana, “He may have been abandoned.  I’ll just have to raise him myself.”

    ***

Now Will may have found raising dogs a breeze, but babies, on the other hand…

“Graham, where is that racket coming from?!” Dr. Chilton demanded as he stormed into Will’s office.  Hannibal had started crying loudly, and Will was trying (and failing) to soothe him.

“Hannibal, Fred,” Will answered, lightly bouncing Hannibal in his arms.  “He’s been crying since lunchtime, but I can’t figure out what’s wrong.”

Jack Crawford, Will’s boss, joined Chilton in the doorway.  “Graham, where’d you get that baby?  It’s not one of those missing infants, isn’t it?”

         “No, sir.”

“How about you go home early and take care of him?” Jack suggested.  “I don’t want any distractions.”

“You’re not going to ask further questions, Crawford?” Chilton questioned.  “That was a strange-looking baby.”

“Can’t.  I have a headache.”  With that, Jack left Will’s office, rubbing his temple.  Chilton immediately followed him.

Will took the fussy Hannibal, wrapped him in the blanket, and found a basket to carry him in.  He said a hasty goodbye to Alana as he passed by her, and he drove back home.

A menagerie of dogs greeted Will when he arrived home with the basket haphazardly in his arms.  He petted their heads as he went up the stairs and into his bedroom.  The empty room amplified Hannibal’s cries, but Will tried his best to ignore them as he looked up ways to cure baby colic.

For the next two hours, Will tried several solutions such as giving Hannibal soy-based baby formula and wrapping his blanket up a certain way.  But each solution seemed to make Hannibal cry his lungs out, and he also spat out the baby formula before he even swallowed it.

Finally, Will threw his hands up in the air and cried out, “What do you want, Hannibal?! WHAT?!”

One of Will’s smaller dogs came barreling up the stairs when he heard his master’s yells, and he barked too close to Will’s hand and ended up nipping it.

“Ow, dammit!” Will cried as he whipped his hand away from the dog.  He saw a bit of blood coming out the wound and started sucking at it.  But he realized something: Hannibal had stopped crying.

Will looked at Hannibal, who was holding his arms out and making sucking noises.  He looked at his bloody hand and back at the plant-baby.

“Blood?  Is that what you want?” Will asked, and Hannibal nodded with a sniffle.  “Okay…”  Will took Hannibal in his arms and placed his hand in front of the baby’s face.  Hannibal latched onto the wound and started sucking the blood.  After a couple of minutes, he let go of Will’s hand.

After that, Will put Hannibal over his shoulder, just like how mothers did to their babies right after they ate, and patted his back until the baby burped a little.

“That better, Hanni?” Will asked.  He put the sleeping Hannibal in the basket, and he passed out onto the bed.

     ***

At one point during the night, Will woke up to check on Hannibal, and to his amazement, he had found that the plant-baby had now become a plant-toddler.  He could barely fit into the basket, and his laurel tendrils and vines had grown along with him.

AN: This is largely inspired by the Little Shop of Cannibals story I’ve seen floating around, but I’m making this as a semi-fanmake of LSOH for the heck of it.  So yes, there will be a few songs in here.

I own neither Hannibal (which I haven't seen yet but I'm already fascinated by it) nor Little Shop of Horrors. The Little Shop of Cannibals AU belongs to :iconfuriarossaandmimma: Hope you enjoy it!
